For Christmas Big P got a crystal growing kit. It looked really cool so I added it to her Amazon wish list. So much fun! Big P and her dad enjoyed a school holiday and set up two crystals. the box says 10 and up but with adult supervision our 6 year old was a big helper.
Here is what is looked like when they first started:
Crystal A was a lighter blue
Crystal B was a darker blue
I took a picture so we could watch the crystals grow and let me tell you over night they grew quite a bit from nothing. The great thing is they were both different so Big P learned in science there is experimentation and results aren’t always the same. Nothing like flexing those STEM muscles!
So within 24 hours…VoilĂ !
The lighter blue had thick crystals
The darker blue had thin spikey crystals
They came out great and we followed the directions and let them sit untouched for seven days. Given to the importance of patience and how in science you need to take your time. Day 7 she begged all day for us to rinse them off. Finally in the afternoon we had time to devote to the crystal project. They were delicate so we took our time and I let her do most of it, with me only assisting a bit. Empowerment for her completing the science project herself. Another bonus is we learned about crystals all week since it spiked her curiosity.
Here the are:
The light blue and thicker crystal
Teh darker blue turned out cool and spikey
So cool and neat way to get you kids interesting in science. Learning about following directions, the process of experimentation and interrupting results. Overall a great kit to do with elementary kids. We will be doing more from the Crystal Kit soon, as they have other colors so we will do more experimentation.
